Jazz Theory Syllabus

Jazz Theory explores contemporary diatonic and chromatic chord progressions found in current popular and jazz music styles. This course will appeal to the individual with a solid music theory background. This is perfect for the student who aspires to become more specialized in the art of jazz. If you are having difficulty recognizing and playing minor key harmony or implementing reharmonization for instance into your work, this course tackles these concerns and so much more. Once you master the basics in this course, you will be ready to take Jazz Arranging 1 and 2.

Prerequisite

The student should have successfully completed Music Theory 1, 2, and 3 or has gained a working knowledge thereof.

Materials Needed

Keyboard and access to Sibelius music software program. Worksheets and review quizzes as needed.

Final Assignment

The student will compose an original song in one of the following forms: ABA, AABA, ABAB, or Blues Form AAB. Your assignment must be performed and recorded on a CD using the minimum rhythm section of keyboard, bass, and drums. If the composition warrants, other instruments may be added.
