COMPOSING FOR JAZZ ORCHESTRA Syllabus
Jazz orchestration has evolved to include composing, arranging, and orchestrating music for instrumental and vocal ensembles that are melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic inflections derived from jazz improvisation. Under the watchful "ear" of your instructor, you will be able to raise your composing competency level to greater heights and enjoyment.
Prerequisite
The student should have completed Music Theory 1, 2, and 3, Jazz Theory, and Jazz Arranging 1 and 2.
The student should have a strong understanding of principles of jazz chord progressions, instrumentation, and rhythm section styles.
Materials Needed
Keyboard and access to Sibelius music software program.
Textbook: Jazz Composition Theory and Practice, Ted Pease, Publisher: Berkeley Press.
Assignments will be given with each chapter and the work will be tailored to fit the needs of the student.
